To abstract painters, impressionism was already an old story because of too many landscapes, too much figuration but when Russian artist Kasimir Malevich found out about Monet, he tried to understate his visual shock: "But it's only color!" Still in 1919, he couldn't go over the first blow and, speaking about The Cathedral of Rouen series (32 paintings), he wrote : " Monet endeavors to make painting grow over the walls of the cathedral." That was it: the landscape would shift from Nature to painting itself…
