ARTIST OF THE WEEK

n°203/ Camille Lévêque

January 2017

by Nathalie Azoulai

The founder of Live Wild collective, Camille Lévêque is a French free-lance photographer currently based in Detroit. One of her series, among many, will just make you cry although it looks quiet and steady. So-called Dads, it was shot between 2014 and 2016, showing family pictures with holes and blanks instead of fathers. "Dads is a blunt testimony of absence, a disturbing hole in the most powerful piece of evidence, as she puts it.You can’t forget what you’ve never known but can choose to remember its absence." About these missing dads, you might not choose between real and symbolic deads, gone dads because of wars, diseases or divorces. Gone but still visible, as corpses' contours marked on floors by cops.
