n°245/ Sirk’s Secret

October 2016

by Nathalie Azoulai

Melodramatic movies never come from nowhere. As if directors were better if they suffer in real life. One of the greatest of all, German-born Douglas Sirk had a bleeding scar to tell and cure. His only son Klaus, whom his first Nazi wife Lydia kept to herself, turned into a Third Reich aryan icon his father could only see acting in movies. And in 1944, Sirk was told Klaus was killed on the Russian front. No happy ending.
