Some painters wish to paint faces, some others long for backs. It could be for the drapery. From Watteau to Hammershøi, we learn to watch human bodies from a back perspective and wonder why it’s so emotional. Is not assault in the back easier, whether stabbing or shooting ? Could it be the reason why eventhough you don’t see the face, you imagine the vulnerable weakness ?
