Whatever movie by Brian de Palma you take, you find previous movies in it and quotes. From Eisenstein's, Hawks's and of course from Hitchcock's films. It's not a secret, it's a claim, a way to be a moviemaker for one of the New Hollywood masters. A film-lover's consistent's tribute to what made his eye and his desire to become one of them. De Palma's movies give their way to images turning into stories, as for example, in Dressed To Kill, the quote to Psycho being the main point, not the unseen reference but the very obvious one. For when one grows up with Hitchcock's scenes, they become the real story, a shower, a plug, scissors, the beating heart of moviemaking according to de Palma.
