Hockney, David (1937)

In the 1980s, the recognized painter, David Hockney, created photo collages and photo montages that owed much to Cubism and were entitled Joiners - compositions of multiple individual images or polaroids that created an innovative narrative that from descriptive became subjective. He considered his ‘drawings with a camera’ as ‘ideas on the perception’ that question the prominence of the look and the construction of meaning by the brain: ‘beauty does not reside in objects, it is in the look.’ The British artist never hesitated to create elaborate mise-en-scènes that echoed his intimate reflections. Believing photographs never capture the true sense of what they depict, David Hockney decided to create a unique two-dimensional moment and space and reinvent his subjects. Yet one can wonder whether the photographer truly builds a new materiality or on the contrary deconstructs reality.
