Duffy, Brian (1933 - 2010)

Having had applied to St Martins School of Art, in 1950, with the intention of becoming a painter, Brian Duffy switched to dress design because of the good-looking women following the course. After refusing a position at Balenciaga, in 1954, because of his wife’s pregnancy, he was hired by Vogue, in 1957 as a fashion photographer who, thanks to his training, perfectly knew how garments should hang. Alongside David Bailey and Terence Donovan - the trio was entitled the ‘black trinity’ by Norman Parkinson -, the British photographer established the visual spirit of the Swinging Sixties with looser, fun and youthful images. Working around Brian Duffy could be explosive -‘he was very scary, but he was the business’, according to Joanna Lumley - but it was never dull, as the mischief enfant terrible liked his models to have a drink and sing while he had an uncanny eye for the unusual, experimenting technical problems in a pre-Photoshop era. He also shot Pirelli Calendars, the covers of David Bowie albums, the set of Louis Malle’s Viva Maria!, advertising campaigns as well as numerous playful portraits of the period’s celebrities such as Michael Caine, John Lennon, Jean Shrimpton, Jane Birkin or Terence Stamp. In 1979, Brian Duffy suffered a nervous breakdown and never took another picture after that, not surprising for someone who wanted to be remembered the following way: ‘He wasn't as steady as a tripod.’
