Holland, Hugh

After having settled as an antique finisher, in Los Angeles, in 1968, Hugh Holland seriously began to practice photography. One afternoon, in 1975, as he was driving up Laurel Canyon Boulevard, he observed skateboarders and knew he had found the subject he would focus on during the three following years: ‘these bodies flying out of this ditch’ that he called angels. The American photographer depicted what were the nonchalant suburban teenagers of Los Angeles, enjoying skateboard in the soft light of long afternoons, chilling and executing free figures with no particular goal. In 1978, Hugh Holland decided to bring an end to his documentation as the skateboard scene was becoming more and more commercial which annihilated the cool feel of his work. Nonetheless his images were revived in 2006 by American Apparel’s founder, Dov Charney, who presented them in the windows of the brand and surely did the photographer’s aesthetic find its way in Larry Clark or Gus Van Sant’s productions.
