Hopper, Dennis (1936 - 2010)

Renown as an iconic Hollywood director and actor, Dennis Hopper also built an important work as a photographer. It was James Dean who had first interested the American actor in photography on the set of Rebel Without A Cause, telling him: ‘I know you're going to direct someday so learn to take photographs and don't crop them, use the still full frame.’ So when his wife, Brooke Hayward got him a Nikon for his birthday in 1961, he was soon seen with his camera around the neck, thus called ‘the tourist’ by his creative friends amongst whom he felt at home as an artist and major art collector. He made portraits of fellow actors such as Paul Newman and Jane Fonda but also of artists such as Jasper Johns or Andy Warhol and his Factory, always respecting James Dean’s advice and thus never cropping his images. While he created Ike and Tina Turner’s River Deep-Moutain High album cover, he also depicted the Civil Rights movement, the urban landscapes of Los Angeles and New York as well as the Hell’s Angels and hippies that had inspired his film, Easy Rider. Sometimes, Dennis Hopper joined his personal passion and his professional activity like when he played, in Apocalypse Now, the obsessive photojournalist who claimed: ‘I wanna get a picture.’
