Jacobi, Lotte (1896 - 1990)

The German photographer’s great-grandfather had met Jacques Louis Mandé Daguerre, in the 1840s and had purchased a licence to make daguerreotypes in Germany. Her whole family installed in the photographic business, Lotte Jacobi began her career by assisting her father at only twelve years old: ‘I was born to photography’. After having tried her hand at acting, she returned to Berlin, in 1927, where she ran her father’s studio and photographed most of the Weimar period’s leading artists, politicians and scientists. She often managed to put her sitters at ease by making them talk about topics that interested them and made them forget the camera, thus creating intimate portraits that focused on faces and hands: ‘my style is the style of the person in front of me.’ Most of her work disappeared when she was forced to flee to America in 1935 where she opened a successful business, depicting such major figures as Eleanor Roosevelt and Alfred Stieglitz. Ironically, back in Germany, many officials whom she had portrayed, unaware that she was a Jewish, had praised her work as ‘good examples of Aryan photography.’
