Marshall, Jim (1936 - 2010)

Soon after he had settled in San Francisco, in 1964, Jim Marshall witnessed the arrival of legendary rock bands such as the Grateful Dead or the Jefferson Airplane. The American photographer was at the right spot to capture the dynamic and diverse American musical scene of the 1960s and 1970s. Celebrated for his dynamic depictions of live performances such as the iconic Woodstock music festival, Jimi Hendrix setting his guitar on fire at the Monterey Pop or Johnny Cash and his ecstatic prison audiences, Jim Marshall also produced intimate photographs. Quieter, these images nonetheless also highlighted the vitality of musical artists through their humanity and sensitivity: pensive and relaxed individuals before the shatter of stages and their installment as counterculture idols.
