Moses, Stefan (1928)

As he had practiced photography from childhood, Stefan Moses turned to photojournalism before being detained in a concentration camp by the Nazis during World War II. He managed to escape the camp, in 1945, and despite the trauma, decided to remain in Germany where he soon became the observer of his country’s inhabitants, from street cleaners and workers to wanderers, hippies and artists such as Joseph Beuys. His black-and-white portraits clearly evoke August Sander’s documentation techniques and reveal how devoted he was to his homeland and its people. Stefan Moses depicted his subjects with empathy and highlighted them as influential components of the construction of Germany’s multiple visage.
