Shaw, Mark (1921 - 1969)

Mark Shaw began his career as a photographer for Harper’s Bazaar, in 1946, before becoming a freelance collaborator of Life magazine in, 1952, for which he depicted many of the most prestigious celebrities of the 1950s within bright and elegant portraits, from Elizabeth Taylor to Gabrielle Chanel and Audrey Hepburn while he captured the Paris’ fashion collections, in particular those of the influential Christian Dior. As he once photographed a young model called Nico who would later become the lead signer of cult counterculture group, The Velvet Underground, the American photographer is mostly remembered today for his vibrant unofficial portraits of the Kennedys. Should his images be set in the White House or at Hyannis Port, they all enabled to document more than just a politician’s life but also that of a family with a father fooling around with his children and a mother acting as a carefree fashion icon. Mark Shaw succeeded in establishing the mythical aura of a tribe that could be at the same time, properly outstanding and fabulously candid.
