Ellen Von Unwerth first worked as a knife-thrower and a clown assistant in a circus before becoming an international model for 10 years. Never at ease in front of the camera, she decided to move behind and earned great recognition for the first time with a shoot for Guess, in 1989, featuring a young Claudia Schiffer. Inspired by Helmut Newton and Jacques-Henri Lartigue, the German photographer produces saturated colorful or black and white images that depict evocative and erotic scenes. In a world where men are unseen, her ‘women are not just there to be admired, they are there to be enjoyed’ within playful and simple settings. Sometimes fetishist, others romantic, her subjects are always uninhibited and sexy and, as if they were seeking for a voyeuristic look, audaciously invite us in their disclosed intimacy.
