Demachy, Robert (1859 - 1936)

A wealthy heir, Robert Demachy becomes a member of the Société Française de Photography, in 1882, and he strongly promotes the international pictorialist movement. With images that clearly recall drawing and painting with evocations of Edgar Degas’ dancers and Gustave Courbet’s nudes as well as landscapes thanks to his use of the orange pigment that reminded the sanguine used by artists, the French photographer was also eager to install photography as a modern technique and depicted novel subjects such as automobiles.
