Emerson, Peter Henry (1856 - 1936)

In the mid-1880s, after having graduated as a doctor, Peter Henry Emerson begins practicing photography, concentrating on animals and in particular, birds. Strongly inspired by Jean-François Millet’s Naturalism, he depicts remarkable natural landscapes while he flatly refuses photo retouching and rejects the pictorialist movement although he influences some of its members such as Alfred Stieglitz or Pierre Dubreuil. Fascinated by rural subjects, the British photographer is concerned by traditional ways of life threatened by industrialization as well as tourism and thus becomes an anthropologist of country types. To enhance his defense of rural identity, Peter Henry Emerson presents idealized images opposed to modern machinery: ‘No machine will be invented which will do the work as well as the scythe.’
