Langdon-Coburn, Alvin (1882 - 1966)

A prodigious photographer from a very young age, Alvin Langdon Coburn took some of the most innovative images of the early 20th century. Rejecting conventions, the American visionary shot most of his photographs - his vortographs - through the prism of three pieces of glass, thus separating the image into segments, refracting reality and creating bizarre distortions: ‘Why should not the camera throw off the shackles of conventional representation and attempt something fresh and untried?’. He promptly became part of the Vorticists, a British avant-garde movement that lasted from 1914 to 1918 and encapsulated not only visual art but also literature with such publications as BLAST that presented audacious typography and content. A rebel against all things traditional, Alvin Langdon Corbun was eager to reveal the beauty and wonders of life: ‘photography makes one conscious of beauty everywhere, even in the simplest things, even in what is often considered commonplace or ugly. Yet nothing is really ‘ordinary’, for every fragment of the world is crowned with wonder and mystery, and a great and surprising beauty.’
