Marissiaux, Gustave (1872 - 1929)

One of the main members of Belgian Pictorialism, Gustave Marissiaux’s main work was a series dedicated to the coal mines of Liège’s countryside. Commissioned by the Syndicat du Charbonnage Liégois, the 450 photographs were exhibited at Liège’s Universal Exposition, in 1905, and diffused a documentary yet very artistic aesthetic beautifully playing with light and darkness. With their misty atmospheres, they evoked a poetic and mysterious Symbolist manner but also Théodore’s Rousseau’s landscapes, a style also exquisitely visible in his Venice séries from 1903.
