Furniture Design

Noguchi, Isamu (1904 - 1988)

The American-Japanese designer had originally trained as a designer with the avant-garde Parisian scene in the 1920s. This background fundamentally influenced his mass-produced creations that emphasized sculptural shapes and a great love for material. 'Everything is sculpture... Any material, any idea without hindrance born into space, I consider sculpture.' Blurring boundaries between disciplines, he also created designs full of ambiguous contrasts within forms, tones and substances: a reflection of his personal story where East meets West.
