Mariano Fortuny (1871 - 1949)

Born in Spain, the multi-tasked artist spent most of his life in Venice where he was an architect, couturier, inventor and painter. Much inspired by ancient oriental textiles, he designed rich garments with very modern and body-conscious cuts that seduced avant-garde and emancipated clients. His popular invention, the Fortuny pleats, was a clear evocation of Ancient Greek columns.
