London-based Michelle Suzanne Dockery was born in 1981 and raised in a middle-class Essex family. The youngest of three sisters, she graduated in 2004 from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. After many theater roles that drew her attention and a television debut on several BBC shows, she came to public prominence in 2010 playing Lady Mary Crawley in Julian Fellow's ITV series Dowton Abbey and got then numerous awards nominations. Her authoritative and high-strung character designs an iconic femininity both Edwardian and modern, sly and demanding, unforgettably featuring arched brows, a statuesque porcelain complexion and a breathtaking humorous snobbishness. But being so synonymous with her role of corseted Lady Mary, Dockery might have to go through new performances to reveal the effortless cool attitude she praises when she sings jazz standards and writes songs. Let's remember among many others one of her famous Lady Mary's biting lines some Katharine Hepburn-like aristocratic brat could have flung to her challenging interlocutors : "I'm busy trying to have a life."
