Capucine (1928 - 1990)

At the age of 17, Capucine becomes a rapidly acclaimed model, working for Hubert de Givenchy, Pierre Balmain and Christian Dior. She shares a room with another slender beauty, Audrey Hepburn who becomes one of her dearest lifelong friends. She becomes an actress, in France, during the 1950s even though she only appears in four films including L’Aigle à Deux Têtes by Jean Cocteau, in 1948. In the late 1950s, she is remarked by Hollywood where she incarnates the ideal French woman with her sensual yet elegant features: a cold beauty with mesmerizing blue-grey eyes. She appears in Song Without End, in 1960 and becomes Inspector Clouseau’s wife, her most memorable role, in the now classic Pink Panther series alongside David Niven and Peter Sellers, in 1963. She also stars in other successful productions such as The 7th Dawn, in 1964 and What’s New Pussycat, in 1965. At the end of the 1960s, she returns to Europe where she collaborates with François Truffaut and Federico Fellini, appearing in his atypical Satyricon, in 1969. Suffering from depression and rumours of an unassumed homosexuality, Capucine commits suicide, in Switzerland, in 1990. Nor the flashing lights of fashion photographs, nor Hollywood could have saved the woman who supported her beauty like a burden: ‘Men look at me as if I was a suspicious luggage and they were custom officers.’
