n°205/ Julia Borzucka

January 2017

by Nathalie Azoulai

When she doesn't play with vintage pictures, she plays with symbols and scales. Freelance illustrator and collagist Julia Borzucka is based in Warsaw, Poland, and watches Western signs with an acute attention. It's both cosmic and domestic, meaningful and mundane. If some Mitteleuropa famous writers such as Frantz Kafka once changed the Statue of Liberty into a sword, scaring new migrants, Polish Borzucka chooses a strawberry-like ice-cream, well moulded and pink, looking and probably tasting good. So far. As if it could melt away...
