n°243/ Dear Rose

October 2016

by Nathalie Azoulai

We know nothing about the big American author if we don’t know that in 1937, his beloved sister Rose, who has been diagnosed with schizophrenia, was institutionalized and subjected to a lobotomy in 1943. The suffering characters of his plays seem to spring from here, all sweat and tears, reinventing and rewriting this very real and dear character. Whether you call her Blanche or Catherine, she’s still Rose.
