Rawlings, John (1912 - 1970)

Vogue’s editor in chief, Edna Woolman Chase urged her teams in 1937 and 1938 to ‘concentrate completely on showing the dress, light it for this purpose and if that can't be done with art then art be damned. Show the dress.’A few months later, the American photographer, John Rawlings was hired and would rapidly fulfill Edna Woolman Chase’s expectations. Although his early works showed the strong influence of Horst P. Horst and George Hoyningen-Huene’s theatrical lights, mysterious darkness and opulence, John Rawlings soon privileged daylight, natural environments and more descriptive and informative shots - ‘he brought a realistic visual style, presenting fashion as a force rather than a decoration.’ The photographer broke with an artificial fashion photography to better achieve a bolder look and thus participated in redefining the American look.
