Callahan, Harry (1912 - 1999)

Although he was already enthusiastic about photography, it was a workshop with Ansel Adams, in 1941, as well as his encounter with Alfred Stieglitz, in 1942, that established his passion. From then, he played with exposure and daylight to depict urban landscapes, street wanderers or to caress the faces of his loved ones. Obsessed by his manner, he would endlessly observe his environment and focus on quiet motifs that he rendered with an abstract feel. When he began teaching at Chicago’s Design Institute and discovered Mies Van Der Rohe’s work, the American photographer turned his attention to architecture whose contrasts he enhanced with the help of black-and-white images that highlighted empty and full forms as well as interiors that met the outside. A quest fueled by his approach: ‘my credit, is that I am a man to whom the visible world exists.’
