Steinert, Otto (1915 - 1978)

Abandoning his medical training, Otto Steinart turns to photography following World War II and is one of the founding members of the group Fotoform in Germany. Eager to revive a dynamic art scene in Germany following the Nazi regime, postwar artists turn to avant-garde aesthetics such as Constructivism and the Bauhaus to fuel their technique and manner. Paris is central to Otto Steinart’s motivation and he founds in the French capital the modern forms and structures he wishes to depict in his subjective art works. To the German photographer, the personal vision of the artist must be applied to its images - his taste for movement, his ideological beliefs of reuniting two colliding worlds: the past and the future, the symbol of the reunion of nations after the war years as well as his love for textures. Otto Steinart’s pictures are not only art expressions but also the intimate diary of an artist - ‘a photo only becomes a photographical picture, when it contains an idea, when you feel the spirit and the soul of the creator’
