Tabard, Maurice (1897 - 1984)

During the 1920s, Maurice Tabard becomes a renowned fashion photographer collaborating with Vogue and Harpers Bazaar and that transforms the discipline when he becomes one of the first to set the models in outdoor situations and apply remarkable inventive techniques to his professional commissions. His commercial successes enable the French photographer to pursue original researches in his laboratory where he creates unconventional images with the help of double exposure, solarization - just as Man Ray - photograms that capture spectral silhouettes and inversions. Combining the geometrical aesthetic of Lazlo Moholo-Nagy and the poetic taste of the Surrealist group, Maurice Tabard captures the invisible, the unreal and the imagination. Objects and human figures become ambiguous and bear new symbolic meanings as Maurice Tabard had once urged ‘you have to look…but look well’.
