Nick Brandt had made a name for himself by directing music videos for various pop artists as Moby and Michael Jackson and it was by filming in Africa for the latter that he decided to become a photographer and focus on its fauna. With his contrasted pictures, the British photographer invites us into wild animals’ intimacy, highlighting a deep and moving aesthetic, magnifying their features but also their sensibility. Eager to denounce the destruction of their natural environment, he has decided to go further with his Inherit the Dust series that symbolically replaces portraits of animals but also of people, where they used to live. Landscapes that have become wastelands, quarries or factories and that have left animals homeless and enhanced people’s poverty. A powerful message where the image is strongly sufficient to tell the sad tale of anarchic industrialization.
