The Italian designer challenged Parisian 30s' fashion with her non-conformist creations. An eccentric yet not a marginal, her garments seduced socialites, artists and film stars with strong personalities who could assume to wear a shoe on their head, a skeleton dress or to be adorned with shocking pink. Schiaparelli had bold tastes and friends such as Salvador Dali. One of her most famous customers was Wallis Simpson who married Edward VIII, King of England, who abdicated for the sake of this divorcee, "the woman I love", as he said. Schiaparelli designed many gowns for her, in which Cecil Beaton photographed her. Among them, the Lobster dress that can epitomize the eccentric chic style that inspired other designers, Muccia Prada included.
