Both American actors were leading outstanding careers when they met in 1935 and got married in 1939, after Clark Gable had finally obtained a divorce from his previous wife. The couple managed to build a solid relationship despite their strong differences: Carole Lombard was born in an upper middle class family, lively and generous while Clark Gable who had known a rougher existence could often be taciturn and harsh. Yet it all worked out perfectly well and the pair was one of Hollywood’s Golden Era rare happy and sincere married couples. However the ideal relationship abruptly ended when Carole Lombard died in a plane crash in 1942 during a war bond tour. Clark Gable was left devastated and never recovered. He first joined the Air Corps volunteering for dangerous missions during World War II and became a heavy drinker. Also when he died from a heart attack after the filming of The Misfits, it sounded as if the film had reunited a last time three of Hollywood’s most desperate lost souls and broken hearts.
