The daughter of a noble Neapolitan father and an American mother, Marella Caraccilo di Castagneto studied art, served as an assistant to Erwin Blumenfeld and worked at Vogue magazine. In 1953, she married Giovanni Agnelli, the Fiat heir. During the 1960s, she epitomised the beautiful people Diana Vreeland loved so with her classical features, her wealthy lifestyle and her elegant outfits. A member of Truman Capote's Swans' circle, the role suited her well as she was renowned for having 'the most gorgeous neck in the world'. An art patron, she opened an art gallery designed by Renzo Piano to present the family's collection of Matisse, Picasso or Renoir works of art.
