The descendant of a famed accessories brand that supplied Italian wealthy families with refined leather suitcases and goods, Muccia Prada took over the family business in 1977 and slowly changed the direction of the Italian house with the help of her partner and mentor, Patrizio Bertelli. She introduced ready to wear lines and best-selling handbags such as the nylon backpack of 1985 that became a 1990s hit. The fashion designer, who as a young girl favoured a colourful audacious style, wearing Pierre Cardin and Yves Saint Laurent creations while studying political sciences, proposes garments that she wants to wear and that always precisely illustrate the Zeitgeist. She managed to transform Prada into a global empire and add an intellectual touch to her collections with a strong partnership with contemporary art. Muccia Prada who as a young girl was a Courrèges-wearing communist has become the queen of luxury: an 'aristocommunist'.
