Muses

Joan Miró (1893 - 1983)

A precocious painter, Joan Miró finds, in 1919, in Paris and the surrealist movement, the experimental and playful aesthetics he craves after Pablo Picasso had helped him establish his reputation. Despite his connection to the group, the Spanish artist refuses to belong to it: ‘ What I am looking for, is a movement without movement, something equivalent to what we call the eloquence of silence…I free myself from all pictural conventions (a poison).’ He thus constructs his own style influenced by various inspirations should it be Van Gogh’s art, Robert Desnos' poetry or sculpture but also political events. A style fueled by fantasy and the subconscious, full of vibrant colors that translates the people and environments that surround him, a whimsical observer of the world that led Jacques Prévert to declare: ‘there is mirror in the name of Miro’.
