Abramovic, Marina (1946)

Following the breakthrough of the art of performance in the 1960s in the United States, a young Serbian was experimenting with the discipline in her native country to its extreme. Marina Abramovic was remarked by the art world after having offered her body to the public - who was given the possibility to do whatever it wanted to the artist- in Naples, in 1972. Then, she imagined the most absurd performances alongside her lover and colleague, Ulay, until 1988, putting her body at the centre of all her experiments and art. In 2010, with her collaboration with the MOMA in New York, she turned from underground artist to superstar. There, during 700 hours, the artist was seated, facing an empty chair and waited for someone to join her: 800 000 visitors played the game with tears, laughter, tensions, collapses - as well as a moving confrontation with her past lover, Ulay. With her dramatic features that stand out as a mise-en-scène of her outer-self, Marina Abramovic now entirely belongs to pop culture and counts among her close friends such diverse personalities as Elton John, James Franco, Jay Z, Lady Gaga or Riccardo Tisci while she continues exploring the limits of the human body and spirituality alongside chamans in the aborigine forests. In 2016, the artist will open the Marina Abramovic Institute, in New York to help young artists master the art of performance but also to install in history her name and aura: ‘I like to be like Coca Cola, a brand: that of performance. I invented this language.’
